Organizational DNA

Dear Colleague,

If organizations had actual DNA that could be studied, I am sure it would be to no one’s surprise to find some strong improvement genes within most organizations. Maybe you feel it and have worked with your team or leaders to implement an improvement that better serves your patients, makes the quality of care more precise or the way you serve becomes more efficient. One way that you can contribute is to ask yourself a few key questions.

1.     “How are we doing?”. This lets you find a baseline of where you are. If things are going well, you may not want to address things in that particular area first.

2.     “Are we meeting expectations?”. Start with the patient first. Then think about the expectations of the team or other teams. If you are not meeting expectations, then proceed to the third question.

3.     “How can we improve performance?”. Listen to your team and take the initiative to start testing new ways that might make the performance better.

There are opportunities to learn tools to help us improve yet keep doing these quick improvements in your area. In the end, our patients benefit the most from your innovative thinking.

Sincerely,

Luis Chanaga
